That's a tough question. The good news is that one design style is never the fit. Everyone is a combination.
You'll always hear me say, "It's your home. Do what you love". Your home should be a reflection of you, your style, your life in the home. However, only about 10% of the population can imagine the possibilities that your space can become. Techincally, you don't know what you don't know.
Maybe your design style is just outside of your reach. It's not a bad thing. Just like I don't know how to cook every dish there is and I haven't tried everything so how do I really know what my favorite meal is???
My advice: look at everything and start saving the pictures of what you love. Magazines, Pinterest, Houzz, etc. Once you have built a stack of pics you can start weeding through them and really finding your faves. The ones that speak to you. That represent how you live in your home.
Don't forget your home itself. What does it look like from the outside? Do you live in a coastal? A ranch? A modern? You wouldn't want to live in a moden home and not lean into that style when decorating the inside. Granted your style may more rustic but it is possible to combine the two for a beautful design.
Over the years I have tried many designs styles. Some were more a reflection of my meager budget instead of my preferences. I like to call it the "hand me down" era. As I got older and got married my design style became a reflection of both of our styles combined for a rustic look. As I've gotten even older I have found that a more ecletic design style suites me best. Pieces that tell a story. Granted that story might be how I found it on a trash pile, fixed it up, and now it's in my living room. It still tells my story. I finally feel like my design style tells my guests who I am when they walk in the door and functions for my family as well. I often hear, "this is exactly what I imagined your home would look like". I'm pretty sure it's always a compliment.
Now, I can almost hear you trying to overthink it. You can't do it wrong. Techincally, if design rules are that important then, I guess you could but the rules are not what makes your home beautiful. The design alone is not what makes your home beautiful. Ultimately, the warmth comes from you and your family and the design should follow your lead.
